How do we get to knoydart House from the pier?

We provide all guests at Knoydart house with a pick up and drop off service on arrival and departure from Inverie pier with a vehicle and luggage with trailer. The house is ony a 5 minute walk away but makes for a relaxing start to your holiday here on Knoydart.

Where do we leave cars in Mallaig?

All cars remain in Mallaig while you holiday here. There are several parking locations in Mallaig used by residents and visitors to Knoydart and the Small Isles, at owners risk. On arrival you will notice a long stay car park situated on your left hand side on approach to Mallaig, before the roundabout. Simply drive on straight through the roundabout and pelican crossing, taking your first right after the crossing which takes you to the inner most harbour pier. Your launch will leave from the steps at the pier. You can deposit luggage here and locate a parking place. There is further parking in the village, opposite the West Highland Hotel again at owners risk. There is no charge for parking cars, this is where Knoydart residents remain all year however parking is always stated "at owners risk." It is approximately a 5 minute walk from the pier.

How long does the crossing take?

The crossing time takes approx 25 minutes on fast water taxi or 45 minutes by the Western Isles ferry service. There are several boat operators that can be booked, the details are on our get here page. The crossing is 7 miles across a sheltered sea loch (Loch Nevis) and all boat operators we recommend are MCA coded, family friendly and operate daily.

Do you have an ironing board, washing machine, tumble drier, drying rack?

Yes. We have two commercial sized American Whirlpools. A top loading washing machine,  tumble drier, Brabantia ironing board, iron, full sized pulley drying rack outside in the covered area and also an outdoor washing line as well - ideal for hot tub towels and costumes.

Where can we get supplies?

We always recommend that guests do a big shop before arriving as there is limited shop supplies here on the peninsula. There is a large Morrisons in Fort William which you may want to stop off at en-route, however Mallaig has a well stocked Co-Op, Spar, Chemist and newsagent, as well as an excellent fishmonger Andy Race (01687 462626) where you can buy fresh fish and shellfish to take with you. There is also a Post Office on Knoydart which opens for a few hours a day every day from May - October or Mon, Wed and Fridays Oct - May which carries a limited stock of items. Guests can arrange for goods to be delivered from Mallaig during their stay if further items are required such as fish, shellfish or a Co-op shop (01687 462240). There is a simple procedure for doing so, orders are placed by telephone and paid for by credit card and we have an arrangement with the fast water taxi service operated by Jon Sellers (01687 462916); guests can call him direct and request for goods to be collected and delivered to Knoydart House for a small carriage charge which is paid for separately on delivery.  

Can we bring a vehicle?

All vehicles on Knoydart require a residents local permit and guests are not permitted to bring vehicle with them

Does the house have central heating?

Knoydart House operates by thermal heat pump and has full underfloor heating throughout with each room zone controlled to maintain constant temperature at all times. 

Is there a fire?

Yes, Knoydart House has a large Charnwood island III wood burning stove and we provide a starter pack of logs, further logs can be purchased for the duration of your stay from the house on arrival.

We would love to book a professional massage following a day on the hill, is this possible?

At Knoydart House we have a qualified professional sports massage therapist who can be booked. She will bring her own  massage table to the house and offer a one hour Deep Tissue, Swedish or relaxing aromatherapy massage to guests. Please note that this requires to be booked with a little notice and our therapist is based in Mallaig so requires a minimum of 3 x 1hr appointments from guests at the house.

Can you arrangeany special activities such as clay pigeon shooting or quad biking activities locally for our group staying with you?

We have an exclusive arrangement with a boat operator on Skye who offers tailored packages for groups half day or whole day activities quad biking and clays on Skye as well as tailored made trips to places such as Gavin Maxwells locations from his book Ring of Bright Water, Tobermory (Balamory to the little guests!) and other exciting destinations in the locality. Please ask when booking for packages and price information.

Is there anywhere we can hire mountain bikes?

There is a new mountain bike track newly built on Knoydart by the Knoydart Forest Trust. Mountain bikes may be available by prior arangement  with a local provider and subject to availability at a rate of £25pp per day per bike. Please enquire when booking.

Can we hire fishing rods and where can we fish?

Mackerel fishing off the pier is always a popular holiday activity and usually with great results! Feel free to bring your own rods, nets and crabbing lines for the children. If you wish to do some river fishing there are a few options available. You can fish for free on the small hill-lochs on Knoydart Foundation land. Alternatively there are some catch and release salmon options on the Inverie river (nearby estate for approx £40 per day, or hill loch fishing at Bhromisaig for approx £12 per day pp by request.  You can fish for free on small hill-lochs on Knoydart Foundation land. There is no sea rod hire facility from the house directly however if you wish to bring your own angling gear, please do. Our local boat operators can offer you a half or full days fishing charter on request with sea angling rods hired as part of their excursion package.

Do you have a BBQ and outdoor furniture?

Yes, we have just newly acquired a large Weber Genesis Gas burning barbeque and some stunning New Zealand outdoor furniture table and chairs so you can enjoy cooking / dining alfresco in the evenings at Knoydart House. BBQ Gas is charged at £10 for the week, if you wish to use this facility, payable on departure. 

Can we do any guided walks on Knoydart?

There are plenty low level and high level walks, that can be tailored to all ages and abilities. We have an excellent ranger service here on Knoydart and you can arrange a guided walk that easily accommodates mixed abilities in your group from one hour to a full day with a landrove,r to suit your own requirements. There are many marked walks and woodland trails that you can do unaided such as Knoydart in a Nutshell. To book a guided walk direct with our ranger (01687 462242)

Can we organise a babysitter?

Yes. we can arrange for one of our own responsible family babysitters on request with notice.

Can we arrange a birthday surprise, eg meal, champagne or seafood platters to be provided at Knoydart House?

Yes, we can organise just about most things with a little notice, from seafood banquets, to dinner reservations, champagne on ice etc

Can we get married at Knoydart House?

We have had some lovely humanist ceremonies here on Knoydart for civil partnership ceremonies please enquire.

We would like to book the house but may have overspill in numbers?

Knoydart House sleeps 10 guests and with this number the house offers a luxury spacious feel with plenty of social space which is makes the house such a special place to stay. We can provide one extra zed bed with linen and up two cots (without bedding) rates on application. We can also put you in touch with other recommended accommodation providers if you guest numbers increase but please note Knoydart House facilities are only for the use of guests staying with us.

We have several guests staying for part of the week and other guests joining us later can you do a mid week linen changeover for our new guests?

Linen, towels and hot tub towels are all included /provided and beds are made up on arrival. If you require fresh linen for new guests arriving later in your rental week we can offer additional fresh linen, stripping and remaking beds so suit your own requirements at £10pp.

Is there a telephone/ wifi/ television/ sound dock / games chest /good reading material at Knoydart House ?

Yes we have a telephone for guests use with honesty box, games chest,  wifi, freesat television, blue ray DVD player and also a portable DVD player ideal for little guests (with selection of scottish DVD's and children's classic films) a good selection of books and magazines on Scottish interest and wildlife.

Can we bring our dog with us?

Well behaved pets are most welcome £30 per dog per week up to  maximum of 3 dogs. We ask that dogs remain strictly downstairs and out of bedrooms/off furniture at all times - (there is a stairgate in situ to assist). Please bring your dogs own bedding, towels, bowls etc. We can provide extra towels for beach walks, drying off etc. upon request.

Is there anything else we should bring with us?

We provide toilet rolls, black bags, cleaning materials and a starter pack of tea, sugar, milk, coffee and ground coffee however, you may want to consider bringing extra dishwasher tablets, wetsuits, ipod (we have a Bose sound dock), laptop (for wifi), baby bedding for cots and your fishing rods. Please bring your own choice of cooking oil and washing powder -(due to different skin sensitivities and nut allegies we ask that you select your own preferred oil and powder, thank you).  If you have young family members staying with us here at knoydart House what about crabbing lines, kites, spades and buckets these are always a great source of entertainment for their holiday!
