Environment

Here on Knoydart we have a small, caring community who have shown alot of commitment and care to keeping Knoydart the unspoiled last true wilderness it is known as. Rugged and beautiful, stunning and dramatic;  it is a happy healthy place to stay.

We are very keen on encouraging our visitors to support the local businesses we have in Knoydart and the locality. We have a local community garden that grows fresh produce sometimes available for sale. There is a great fresh local fish merchants in Mallaig, Andy Race, our local pub The Old Forge serves great  estate venison, Knoydart langoustines, mussles and hand dived scallops reducing food miles and encouraging economic sustainability and employment locally.

Keeping it this way is what makes our remote little village a magical holiday destination. As part of the UK Curriculum for Excellence in schools our children are being brought up to respect our planet, look after our natural resources and to reuse, reduce and recyle wherever they can. Here at Inverie Primary School and Nursery we are going for the Eco Schools Award. This is great to see!

Knoydart  is not on mains electricity, there are no mobile masts and we operate by private small hydro scheme. Our power is green but is very dependant on rainwater  which collects naturally in our hill lochs.  We have built Knoydart House with eco solutions in mind, larch cladding, environmentally sensitive insulation materials,  thermal heat pump, wood burning stove using locally sourced sustainable wood fuel from the Knoydart Forest Trust, half flush loos, high grade insulation, energy efficiency appliances and low energy light bulbs throughout.

Cleaning products are sensitively sourced where possible. On Knoydart we are now able to recycle glass, aluminium and paper products. Our young guests staying here with us at Knoydart House (and maybe some of our older ones too!) might be interested to know we have an OWL installed in the house. She works with wifi and carefully monitors our electrical consumption, Kilowatt expenditure in £’s and CO2 emissions at any given time. She fluctuates with every light and appliance in use and helps you to help us preserve our commitment to sustainable tourism on Knoydart, by promoting awareness to guests in an unobtrusive way.

We would love you to be able to enjoy the natural beauty of Knoydart and experience the magic of living here remotely. We have no light pollution here and it is important to our community that we preserve this not only for visitors but for those that live here too. Please help us to respect this and be aware of leaving unnecessary lights turned on. Knoydart House has large glass windows, which lets the outside in but need not dilute the Milky Way.

Thank you for being a star!
